Biological Behavior of Human Breast Cancer Micrometastases

Purpose: Clinically undetectable micrometastases may account for disease recurrence in breast cancer patients after variable disease-free intervals. However, little is known about the cellular mechanisms controlling human breast cancer micrometastases. We compared tumor proliferation rate, apoptotic index, and angiogenesis in human breast cancer micrometastases with those of macroscopic axillary lymph node metastases.

Estrogen metabolism via D-ring pathway is associated with a higher susceptibility to breast cancer.

Purpose: Estrogens are involved in the etiology of breast cancer. However estrone and estradiol are hydroxylized to different metabolic products and it is still unclear which estrogen metabolites are most relevant to breast carcinogenesis. Preliminary data have shown that D-ring metabolites like 16alpha-hydroxyestrone (16-OHE1) may increase the risk of developing breast cancer (BC), whereas A-ring metabolites like 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1) could be protective. Therefore we investigated the ratio of 2-OHE1 to 16-OHE1 in BC patients compared to a control group.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is offered to breast cancer patients to rid the body of any microscopic cancer cells that may remain near the area where the cancer was originally found. The usual course of therapy includes daily treatments five days a week for five to seven weeks. Each session generally lasts an hour or less.

HER2 protein overexpression in estrogen receptor-positive ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast: fr

Recent clinical data have suggested that the efficacy of tamoxifen in reducing the risk of local recurrence following lumpectomy and radiation therapy in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is limited to patients with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive lesions.

However, it is currently not known if HER2 protein overexpression might be associated with reduced tamoxifen benefit in patients with ER-positive DCIS, as has been suggested in patients with ER-positive invasive breast cancer and in preclinical models

Breast Reconstruction Following Removal A Breast

Reconstruction of a breast that has been removed due to cancer or other disease is one of the most rewarding surgical procedures available today. New medical techniques and devices have made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close in form and appearance to matching a natural breast.

Role of axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with pure ductal carcinoma in situ of the br

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is an effective tool for axillary staging in patients with invasive breast cancer. This procedure has been recently proposed as part of the treatment for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), because cases of undetected invasive foci and nodal metastases occasionally occur. However, the indications for SLN biopsy in DCIS patients are controversial.

The aim of the present study was therefore to assess the incidence of SLN metastases in a series of patients with a diagnosis of pure DCIS.

Prediction of axillary lymph node involvement of women with invasive breast cancer.

Sentinel lymph node(SLN) biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that provides accurate nodal staging information. Patients with SLN metastases need to undergo complete axillary dissection to treat their axilla. Predictive modelling for lymph node involvement may help identifying a subgroup of breast cancer patients with high incidence of axillary node metastases, in which SLN biopsy is likely to less useful. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the incidence and predictors of axillary lymph node metastases in patients with invasive breast cancer.
